Council Vote Begins Multiyear Process to Bring Coronado Customers More Competitive Energy

CORONADO, CALIF. — The Coronado City Council voted unanimously today to become the newest member of San Diego Community Power, beginning the process to offer residents a choice in where their electricity comes from, with the potential of lower rates and access to programs.

“The people of Coronado deserve the same opportunity for affordability, choice and access to energy programs most of San Diego County enjoys,” said Coronado Councilmember Amy Steward. “I’m grateful to my colleagues for voting to join San Diego Community Power, which consistently has put customers first while moving steadily toward the goal of affordable, 100% renewable power for all by 2035.”

Community Power is a community choice energy program that gives customers an option to run their homes or businesses on higher levels of renewable power at competitive rates. Since 2021, Community Power has grown to serve nearly a million municipal, business and residential power customers in the cities of San Diego, Chula Vista, Encinitas, La Mesa, National City and Imperial Beach as well as the unincorporated communities in the County of San Diego.

Community Power sources electricity for its customers, while SDG&E transmits and delivers that power to customers’ homes and businesses. For a full breakdown of how electric bills in Community Power’s service areas work, visit https://SDCommunityPower.org/Billing-Rates/Understanding-Your-Bill/.

Before Coronado residents can start receiving service, the Community Power Board of Directors must vote to accept Coronado as its newest member and an application must be submitted to the California Public Utilities Commission. The Community Power board is composed of an elected official from each of the jurisdictions it serves.

Coronado could begin receiving service in 2028. Per California law, all eligible customers would be automatically enrolled in Community Power when service begins. They could opt out of the service and return to SDG&E at any time.

“Today’s vote shows that working families across our region are choosing public power because they want affordability and local control,” said Terra Lawson-Remer, Chair of the San Diego Community Power Board. “Community Power was built on a simple idea: the electricity we rely on should be accountable to residents, not shareholders. We welcome Coronado’s decision and look forward to completing the next steps to bring its 12,000 accounts into a regional partnership focused on affordability, local accountability and putting people first.”

This year, Community Power offered its most competitive rates in its history, with rate options that provide as much as a 10% discount compared to SDG&E standard service.
