Community Power Board Unanimously Approves Coronado
SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Community Power Board of Directors voted unanimously today to accept the City of Coronado as the agency’s eighth member, marking a significant milestone in the continued growth of one of the nation’s leading community choice energy providers.
The Board’s action follows the Coronado City Council’s July decision to pursue membership in an effort to provide residents and businesses with a locally governed alternative to investor-owned utility service.
The Council selected Councilmember Kelly Purvis to represent Coronado on Community Power’s Board of Directors and Mayor Pro Tem Carrie Downey to serve as the Alternate Director.
“Coronado’s membership reflects the growing demand for locally governed energy choices that prioritize affordability, accountability and community investment,” said Terra Lawson-Remer, chair of the San Diego Community Power Board of Directors and the San Diego County Board of Supervisors. “As our eighth member agency, Coronado strengthens a coalition of communities working together to build a more resilient, affordable and sustainable energy future for the San Diego region.”
With Coronado’s addition, Community Power remains the second-largest community choice aggregator in the United States, serving nearly 1 million customer accounts across the region. The agency currently provides electricity generation service in the cities of San Diego, Chula Vista, Encinitas, La Mesa, National City and Imperial Beach as well as the unincorporated communities in the County of San Diego.

A feasibility study conducted by Community Power showed that Coronado’s approximately 12,000 customer accounts would add approximately 1% to the total annual energy load and would not have an impact on existing customers.
Community Power will now move forward with filing an implementation plan amendment with the California Public Utilities Commission. If the commission approves it, customers could begin receiving electricity from Community Power in 2028.
This year, Community Power offered the most competitive rates in its history, with rate options that provide as much as a 13% discount compared to SDG&E standard service.
