Time-of-Use

With TOU, electricity costs change depending on the time of day.

When You Use Energy Matters

Time-of-Use is how electricity pricing works for most customers. Understanding TOU and using electricity when it costs the least can help you lower your energy bill.

Costs More

4 p.m. — 9 p.m.

Electricity is more expensive in the evening, between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. These “peak hours” are when more people are using large appliances like ovens and stoves to cook dinner; taking hot showers or baths that require water heaters; or turning on lights as the sun goes down. The sun setting also means that solar panels are producing less energy.

Costs Less

10 a.m. — 2 p.m.,
Midnight — 6 a.m.

Electricity is least expensive between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. when the sun is shining and solar panels are producing a surplus of energy, or between midnight and 6 a.m. when demand is low. Shifting major energy use to these “super off-peak hours” can help you save on your energy bill.

Save by Shifting Your Routine

Small adjustments to your daily routine can lead to noticeable savings over time.

Try a few simple shifts:

A child joyfully sitting in a laundry basket with arms raised, pulled by a woman in a cozy sweater and jeans. The scene is light-hearted and playful.
Run your dishwasher, do laundry or charge devices during super off-peak hours.
A vintage-style metal fan sits on a wooden table in a cozy living room with a blurred gray couch and beige throw, conveying a warm, comfortable atmosphere.
Use fans instead of the A/C, whenever possible.
A person adjusts a smart thermostat via a smartphone app. Both thermostat and phone display an orange screen with the number 77, indicating temperature control.
Use smart devices, like thermostats and plugs that can automatically turn off during peak hours.
