Stable Outlook Strengthens Ability to Secure Lower-Cost Power and Pass Savings on to Customers

聖地牙哥 - San Diego Community Power earned its first public credit rating from S&P Global Ratings Monday, receiving an investment-grade “A” issuer credit rating with a stable outlook; a milestone that positions the agency to negotiate more favorable energy contract and credit terms that can reduce costs for customers.

The rating reflects Community Power’s strong financial foundation and matches the highest credit ratings received by comparable community choice energy programs in California. With this designation, Community Power gains greater flexibility to manage power supply costs and make long-term investments that support rate stability.

“Families across San Diego are struggling with rising bills, and our job is to bring those costs down wherever we can,” said Community Power Board Chair Terra Lawson-Remer. “By prioritizing disciplined financial management, we earned an investment-grade credit rating that strengthens our ability to secure lower-cost power and keep electricity rates stable and affordable over the long term.”

Community Power is one of 25 community choice aggregation (CCA) programs across California that allow local municipalities to procure electricity on behalf of their residents. With this achievement, Community Power becomes the 11th CCA in the state to earn a public credit rating and the youngest one to do so.

“Over the last five years, we have focused on managing costs carefully while delivering cleaner, more affordable power,” said Community Power Chief Executive Officer Karin Burns. “The ‘A’ rating reflects the discipline, expertise and customer-first mindset of our team.”

In its report, S&P Global Ratings cited several of Community Power’s strengths, including full rate-setting autonomy, comprehensive financial policies and planning, robust agreements with local governments, and a sophisticated management team. The agency also noted that Community Power’s strong reserves give it the flexibility necessary to keep rates competitive while meeting financial obligations.

Community Power is a community choice energy program that gives customers an option to run their businesses and homes on significantly higher levels of renewable power at competitive rates. It serves nearly 1 million customers in San Diego, Chula Vista, Encinitas, La Mesa, National City, Imperial Beach and the unincorporated communities of San Diego County.
