Learn How Community Power Works

Overview & Local Impact

What Is San Diego Community Power?

San Diego Community Power is a community-driven, not-for-profit agency that brings cleaner, locally controlled electricity to the San Diego region. Serving nearly 1  million accounts across the cities of San Diego, Chula Vista, Encinitas, Imperial Beach, La Mesa, National City and the unincorporated areas of San Diego County, Community Power offers sustainable energy choices with a focus on equity and local reinvestment.

What is a CCA?

CCA stands for Community Choice Aggregation. In California, state law allows cities and counties to join together to purchase electricity on behalf of their residents and businesses. This local model gives communities more control over the source of their power and the programs that support clean energy, affordability and equity.

With a CCA like Community Power, you gain:

SDG&E continues to deliver the electricity, maintain the poles and wires and manage billing. The only change you see is that Community Power appears as a line item on your SDG&E bill – but it is not an extra charge. It merely replaces the electric generation charge that you would otherwise pay to SDG&E.

How Community Power Service Works

When you flip on a switch or plug in a device, Community Power is the agency that secures the electricity powering your home or business. SDG&E continues to deliver that energy, maintain the lines and send your bill. Here’s how the process works:

Delivery and Billing

SDG&E delivers the electricity through its grid and continues to handle billing. Your bill looks the same, but the generation portion reflects Community Power’s cleaner power.

Our lowest-cost service plan

For those seeking a more affordable service plan, PowerBase provides a 5% discount compared to SDG&E’s electricity generation rates. It has a similar renewable content as SDG&E’s standard service for customers who want lower costs, predictability in their electricity generation rates and to continue supporting their community-driven, not-for-profit clean energy provider.

Opting Out of Our Service

You also have the option to opt out of our service altogether and return to SDG&E’s electric generation service — but before you do, you should know that Community Power offers service plans that cost less than SDG&E’s. Community Power is not a new or additional charge. We are merely replacing the electric generation charge that you would otherwise pay to SDG&E.

Re-enrolling in Our Service

If you previously opted out of Community Power service and would like to re-enroll, we’re happy to welcome you back!

You can re-enroll right here on our website. Just be sure to have a copy of your SDG&E bill handy as you will need your SDG&E account number.
