Efficient Refrigeration Program

Save energy and lower costs with energy-efficient equipment and guidance at no cost.

Community Power is providing energy-efficient refrigerators and freezers at no cost to corner stores and small businesses to stock California-grown fresh foods, thanks to funding from the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA).

Qualifying commercial customers must meet the following criteria to be considered:

    • Corner stores, including small-scale or grocery stores, either independent or chain (stores do not need to be on street corners)

 

    • Small businesses, including, but not limited to, small farm operations with farm stands or stores, that sell or donate food to low-income or low-food-access clientele

 

    • Located in a low-income or low-food access area in a rural, urban, or suburban region.

 

    • Sells or donates a limited selection of foods and other products

 

    • Currently accepts or is in the process of applying to accept EBT/SNAP/CalFresh benefits

 

    • Must be a Community Power customer

Accepted participants can expect to receive:

    • Up to two pieces of equipment (refrigerator and/or freezer)

 

    • Energy assessment of your store (optional)

 

    • Resources on sourcing, stocking and selling produce

 


 

Available Equipment

Participants can select up to two pieces of equipment from a variety of energy-efficient refrigerators and freezers. Below are the different models and types available for selection:

In 2022, previous grantees from the CDFA’s Healthy Stores Refrigeration Grant Program were surveyed by the Nutrition Policy Institute and showed an increase in satisfaction and profitability, including:

    • 78% increase in customers

 

    • 94% increase in ability to sell produce

 

    • 97% satisfaction rate

 

    • 79% increase in profitability
