Join the program by connecting your EV through the Optiwatt app or website. Set your charging preferences and plug in. The program automatically charges your vehicle when energy demand is lower.

Lower energy costs: Charging is scheduled to avoid hours of high energy demand when electricity prices are highest.
Effortless charging: EV Flex Connect takes care of scheduling by automatically charging your car based on your preferences, so that all you have to do is plug in at home.
Strengthen the grid: Charging your EV during times of lower demand helps reduce stress on the grid, making energy more reliable for everyone. Most EV drivers charge overnight. EV Flex Connect spreads charging across super off-peak windows so vehicles are not all charging at once.

Eligibility

To participate you must:

  • Be an active Community Power residential customer
  • Own or drive an eligible EV* and charge it at home at least 50% of the time
  • Have Wi-Fi or cellular service at the location of the home charger
  • Use a dedicated charger in your garage, driveway or parking spot used by the household only
  • Not be simultaneously enrolled in another demand response program, such as the Emergency Load Reduction Program (ELRP) or the Demand Side Grid Support (DSGS) Program

*EV Flex Connect is an active pilot program primarily optimized for Tesla drivers. We are in the demonstration phase for some other EV makes and models.

You are welcome to enroll if you drive an eligible, non-Tesla vehicle, but your experience in the program may vary, and your vehicle may not always charge as expected. Community Power and Optiwatt are working to improve compatibility and customer experience across additional vehicle makes. Your participation and feedback help support program improvements and expansion.

How It Works

Join the program using the Optiwatt app or website and connect your eligible EV.

Share your charging needs, schedule and preferences.

Enroll in EV Flex Connect by scrolling to the “Programs” section on the Optiwatt app home page.

It will take a few days to review your enrollment application. Once approved, plug in at home and let EV Flex Connect do the rest — your EV will be charged to the level you set by the time you need it while shifting charging to times when energy demand is lower.

You can override the schedule at any time if needed, but frequent overrides may affect your eligibility for participation incentives.

Note: Non-Tesla vehicles may not always charge as expected. For the best experience, we recommend removing all charging schedules from your in-vehicle settings and manufacturer app.

When you enroll, you will connect your EV to the Optiwatt app and set your charging preferences, including your target battery charge percentage and when you need your vehicle ready. Based on this information and Community Power electricity generation rates, the program creates a smart charging schedule that automatically shifts charging to lower-demand times when electricity costs are cheapest.

Your vehicle will be charged to the level you requested by the time you need it; simply plug in your vehicle at home and EV Flex Connect will take care of the rest.

You may participate if your charger is used exclusively by your household, such as a charger located in a private garage, driveway or assigned parking space.

You cannot participate if the charger is shared with other residents or the public, such as a common charger in a multi-unit building.

Yes, as long as Wi-Fi or cellular service is available where your EV charges. If reliable connectivity is unavailable, your EV will not receive the optimized charging signals needed to participate.

Telematics-enabled EVs that can be remotely controlled and monitored through the Optiwatt platform are eligible for EV Flex Connect. The list of eligible vehicles is updated regularly on the EV Flex Connect webpage.

Additional vehicles may be added in the future. Please check the program website for the latest information.

You may enroll multiple eligible EVs per household, as long as each vehicle meets program requirements.

Enrollment takes place in two steps:

  • Step 1: Create or log into your Optiwatt account
    • Download the Optiwatt mobile app or visit their website.
    • Connect your eligible EV to the platform.
    • Select San Diego Community Power as your provider.
    • Choose your electricity rate plan (you can find this on your electricity bill).
  • Step 2: Enroll in EV Flex Connect
    • Once your vehicle is connected, you will see the EV Flex Connect enrollment option in the Optiwatt app.
    • Complete the short enrollment process to start participating.
    • If you are already an Optiwatt user, you will log in, confirm your profile information is up to date and look for the EV Flex Connect enrollment prompt in the Home or Devices tab.
