Smart Home Flex

Save energy and money while contributing to a more reliable energy grid.

San Diego Community Power customers who register their smart thermostat(s) receive a one-time $50 upfront incentive with ongoing rewards. Participation is limited.

What Is Smart Home Flex?

Smart Home Flex is a new pilot program that allows Community Power to contact your smart thermostat automatically and temporarily adjust its settings to shift energy use away from peak demand times when energy is most expensive. These adjustments can save you money and enhance the reliability of the energy grid.

You will always be in control of your comfort and can override the automatic adjustments at any time.

How It Works

  • When you enroll in Smart Home Flex, your smart thermostat will automatically adjust the temperature during a Smart Flex Event.
  • A Smart Flex Event occurs when signals are sent to your thermostat(s) to adjust the temperature settings by a few degrees to avoid turning on the air system during peak demand times when energy is most expensive.
  • To maximize occupancy comfort, thermostat temperature may be decreased or increased up to an hour before the start of a Smart Flex Event, which is sometimes referred to as pre-cooling or pre-heating.
  • A Smart Flex Event for thermostats can be called anytime between 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. up to five times per week, with a maximum of 20 events per season.
  • Smart Flex Events won’t be called on weekends and Federal holidays except when state officials call a grid emergency or other critical grid conditions.
