Understanding Your Bill

Let’s breakdown the billing process.

Please note that San Diego Community Power customers receive a single electric bill from SDG&E. Our charges are included in the same bill.

San Diego Community Power customers receive a single electric bill from SDG&E, which also includes our charges. For the most part, this bill looks the same as any electric bills that you received before you were enrolled in our service.

The key difference is that, because San Diego Community Power now procures the energy that is transmitted to your home or business, SDG&E’s electric generation charge is replaced by San Diego Community Power’s.

Other differences you may notice include:

  • A generation credit from SDG&E
  • A page that details our generation rates and the fees that all CCAs are required by law to add (which we factor into our total charges to be sure that you don’t end up paying more as our customer)

Please note that if you are enrolled in our standard PowerOn service, San Diego Community Power’s charges and SDG&E’s generation credit will generally cancel each other out. There is never a duplicate charge on your electric bill.

Remember that SDG&E is still responsible for servicing your electric account, repairs and billing. If your power goes out or you require an emergency repair, you must contact SDG&E at 1-800-411-7343

San Diego Community Power also hosts Understanding Your Energy Bill workshops, where we break down your energy bill, provide tips on how to save energy and review payment assistance resources available to you. If you are interested in attending, click here to view our upcoming workshops.

  • 5. These charges are associated with SDG&E’s Electric Delivery. SDG&E will continue to charge for the transmission and delivery of electricity, along with a variety of other regulatory and program charges, including Baseline Adjustments, Wildfire Fund Charges, Franchise Fees, and State Regulatory Fees at the same rates they always have.
  • 6. When you are an SDCP customer, you will see an Electric Generation Credit under SDG&E’s Electric Generation portion of the bill to demonstrate what they would have charged you if you had continued to receive your generation services from them. Because SDCP is now providing your electricity, SDG&E has issued this charge back to you as a credit so you do not pay any duplicative generation charges.
  • 7. The Power Charge Indifference Adjustment, or PCIA, is a fee assessed by SDG&E that is intended to ensure customers pay for energy that was contracted by SDG&E to serve them. The PCIA is not a new charge and is assessed for all customers, whether you are enrolled in SDCP electric generation services or not. When you transition to SDCP service, the PCIA is broken out as a separate line item on your bill; before SDCP service, the PCIA was included in SDG&E’s electric generation rates. PCIA is charged on a per kWh basis, based on net monthly usage and is unaffected by Time-of-Use. These charges are set by SDG&E, and we set our rates with the PCIA in mind so that the total cost to SDCP customers is competitive with what you’d pay for SDG&E generation service.
